# Do Polyester and Nylon Shed Microplastics in the Wash?

Do polyester and nylon shed microplastics in the wash? Yes. Synthetic textiles release short plastic fibers during laundering; those fibers travel with the wastewater stream. That laundry pathway is the most publicized half of textile microplastic emissions. ## What Laundry Studies Measure When Synthetic Clothes Are Washed

Laundering experiments count or mass fibers released from garments or fabric swatches across wash cycles. Polyester and nylon repeatedly appear as emitters because they are continuous filament or staple synthetics that fragment under mechanical action, detergent chemistry, and temperature. Load size, garment age, fabric construction, and wash settings change the numbers; the direction of the finding does not: washing synthetics contributes plastic microfibers to wastewater.

[NOAA](https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/microplastics.html) treats microplastics as a widespread environmental contaminant. The [EPA](https://www.epa.gov/trash-free-waters) frames trash and debris in waterways as a pollution problem worth reducing upstream. Textile laundry is one of the fiber sources those programs keep in view. Quantifying shed from a wash load is an environmental inventory task. It is not a statement that one laundry cycle produces a specific human disease.

## Filters and Treatment Plants Versus Source Control

Consumer and municipal interventions (laundry bags, in-line filters, wastewater treatment) can capture a fraction of fibers. Capture is incomplete by design: not every household has a filter, not every plant retains every microfiber size class, and sludge pathways can reintroduce fibers to land when biosolids are used. That is why materials science keeps returning to source control: a plant-based fiber cannot emit polyester or nylon microplastic because it was never petroleum filament.

Filters remain useful as mitigation. They do not rewrite the fiber content of a polyester-only line. ## How Laundry Shed Differs From Wear-Time Shed
