# Recycled Polyester Still Sheds Plastic Microfiber

> Recycled polyester can lower feedstock carbon versus virgin PET, but it remains plastic filament. Here is what that means for microplastic shed and skin-contact chemistry, without confusing carbon math with fiber identity.

Recycled polyester still sheds plastic microfiber because recycling changes feedstock origin more than polymer identity. rPET is still polyethylene terephthalate. In wear and wash it can fragment into the same class of synthetic microfibers that virgin polyester releases. Carbon accounting and microplastic inventory are different ledgers. This page keeps them separate so brands do not treat a recycled claim as a shed or skin-contact solution.

## What "Recycled Polyester" Changes, and What It Does Not

Bottle-to-fiber and textile-to-textile recycling can reduce demand for virgin fossil feedstock and improve certain life-cycle carbon scores when systems are real and audited. That is a climate and circularity argument.

It does not turn PET into plant cellulose. The filament remains a hydrophobic synthetic polymer. Abrasion in wear, loft in dryers, and mechanical action in washers can still release plastic microfibers. Finish packages, dyes, and residual process chemistries can still sit on a skin-contact garment. Recycled content is not a substitute for asking what the fiber is.

## Why Microplastic Inventory Does Not Follow the Carbon Claim

Environmental communication often collapses "better" into one word. Microplastic researchers and ocean programs such as [NOAA](https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/microplastics.html) care whether particles are synthetic polymers in the environment. A fiber that began as a bottle and ends as a tight is still a synthetic polymer when it sheds.

Lifecycle models that split airborne wear/dry emissions from laundry emissions (see the wear-time brief) apply to synthetic textiles as a class. They are not canceled by a recycled feedstock story. Filters and treatment plants, discussed in the laundry brief, likewise do not care whether the PET was virgin or recycled when a microfiber reaches the water column.

## Skin-Contact Chemistry Is Still a Polyester Conversation

Catalyst residues, performance finishes, and migration under sweat and heat are polyester-program questions whether the polymer is labeled recycled or virgin. ## How Brands Can Talk About rPET Without Overclaiming

Defensible messaging usually sounds like this:

- Recycled polyester may improve feedstock and carbon metrics when verified.
- It remains plastic filament and can shed synthetic microfibers in wear and wash.
- Next-to-skin purity and shed goals require fiber identity changes (plant cellulose) or hybrid strategies, not recycled PET alone.

That discipline protects against greenwash scrutiny called out in the polyester-only portfolio piece. Regulators and platforms that police environmental claims increasingly separate circularity language from pollution language; brands should too.

## Where Plant Fiber Fits

A hemp-lyocell program with disclosed elastane is a different answer to shed and skin-contact inventory: no PET filament to recycle or to shed as polyester microplastic. It is not a claim that recycled polyester has no role in any category. It is a claim that for the layers that dominate wear-time and wash-time fiber release against skin, polymer identity matters as much as feedstock story.
