Dyeing Hemp Fabric Instead of Polyester

How is dyeing hemp fabric different from dyeing polyester?

Dyeing hemp fabric follows the cellulosic path mills already use for cotton and lyocell, including reactive dyes. Polyester filament is commonly colored with disperse dyes in its own bath. The fiber changes the dye class. It does not invent a new machine.

Dyeing hemp fabric is a cellulosic color decision. Polyester filament is a different polymer, and mills color it on a different dye class. A published study of cotton and polyester blend cloth dyes the cellulosic part with reactive dyes and the polyester part with disperse dyes, commonly in two baths (Scientific Reports, 2024). Hemp and hemp-lyocell sit on the cellulosic side of that split. This page does not copy that paper's recipe, temperature, or carrier. It says which bath the fiber belongs in.

Imperium Fiber ships the cloth greige and dyed. Greige is how a mill dyes in-house. Dyed is how a team takes color without standing up the range. The Journal has the fiber pages. The polyester shed pages stay the shed pages. Dyeing hemp fabric does not re-argue them.

Why Dyeing Hemp Fabric Is Not a Polyester Bath

Polyester is hydrophobic. The dyes that exhaust onto cotton in water do not exhaust onto it the same way. Disperse dyes are the class used for polyester fiber (PMC review of dye application classes). Cellulosic hemp is the other class of problem: a plant fiber a reactive range can color. Lightweight hemp fabric already notes that the knit runs on reactive dye lines a mill owns for cellulosic work. Dyeing hemp fabric is that sentence, written for the dye house rather than for the knitting room.

Sending hemp cloth through a polyester disperse procedure, or polyester through a cotton reactive procedure, is how blends get two-bath programs in the first place. A hemp body that has replaced the polyester filament does not need the polyester bath to exist. Elastane, if the cloth has it, is still disclosed by percentage. It is not a hidden polyester yarn.

USDA hemp rules cover the crop. They do not set a shade. The shade is the mill's. The fiber is the reason the bath changed.

What Stays in Place When Dyeing Hemp Fabric

Color moves. The construction should not, unless the tech pack says it moved. Dyeing hemp fabric on the right bath still has to hit the same shade depth, the same fastness, and the same hand the line already sells. A new fiber is not a reason to skip the dip the mill would have run on cotton.

Reactive work when dyeing hemp fabric

Lab dips, shade bands, and fastness checks stay the mill's methods. Dyeing hemp fabric does not replace a colorfastness test with a fiber story. Ask for the same wash and rub fastness you ask of a cotton program at that depth of shade. The hemp-lyocell guide is where hemp percent and count are chosen before the dip. Around the program's 20 to 35 percent hemp, the hand is still a sample question, not a dye-class question.

Greige or dyed lots when dyeing hemp fabric

Greige is undyed yarn or cloth for in-house color. Dyed arrives with color already in the fiber or on the cloth. Dyeing hemp fabric on your range means you ordered greige and you own the procedure. Ordering dyed means the color work happened upstream and your trial is fit, hand, and recovery. Say which one on the purchase order so the lab does not dip a roll that was never meant to be redyed.

Finishes dyeing hemp fabric does not include

A dye bath is not a PFAS coat and not a pesticide claim. EPA PFAS stays a finish question. The HFGA US Hemp Textile Standard is the restricted-substance list on the delivered fiber. NIEHS is the scientific home for endocrine-active agents, including the dye and finish chemistry other Journal pages already name. Dyeing hemp fabric does not add a new health claim those pages do not make. It changes the fiber that enters the dye house.

How a Mill Writes Dyeing Hemp Fabric on the Pack

Write the color state, the count, and the polyester article you are no longer dyeing.

Counts before dyeing hemp fabric

Activewear and swim cloth are 40/2 hemp-lyocell, with elastane disclosed where the garment needs recovery. Bedding is US hemp spun with Supima, not that ply. Hemp yarn vs polyester yarn is the cone page. Dyeing hemp fabric before the count is chosen is how a shade gets approved on the wrong cloth. Wellness fabric instead of polyester is the fabric sentence once the color is real.

Shed stays a separate line

A microfiber shedding test weighs fragments. It does not certify a dye. Polyester filament is what puts plastic in that debris. Dyeing hemp fabric avoids that filament. It does not promise a zero on a gravimetric filter, because plant lint can leave the cloth. Lint is not polyester. Say both.

The style you stop dyeing

Name the polyester quality the color was matching: the legging, the sheet, the base layer. Why swap polyester for hemp fiber now is the timing. Dyeing hemp fabric is how that swap gets a shade this season, on a range the mill already runs, without a disperse-dye step for a filament that is no longer in the body.

FAQ

Questions mills and brands ask before they spec this cloth.

Can a cotton dye house take on dyeing hemp fabric?

Yes, when the cloth is cellulosic hemp or hemp-lyocell. Dyeing hemp fabric uses the reactive ranges a mill already runs for cotton, which is the equipment note on the lightweight hemp page. Polyester's usual path is a disperse-dye bath. Do not send a hemp knit down a polyester-only procedure and expect the same exhaustion.

Should dyeing hemp fabric start from greige or from a dyed roll?

Greige is the undyed cloth for a mill that controls color, lab dips, and shade. Dyed is the finished-color path when the team does not want to stand up that work first. Dyeing hemp fabric in-house is the greige choice. Buying color upstream is the dyed choice. Both are the same fiber.

Does dyeing hemp fabric remove the need for a shed test?

No. Color and shed are different columns. Dyeing hemp fabric does not put polyester filament into the yarn. A microfiber shedding test still weighs fragments, and plant lint can leave the cloth. Lint is not polyester microplastic. Ask for composition if the report is only a mass.

Does dyeing hemp fabric allow any dye chemistry?

No. The HFGA US Hemp Textile Standard grades the hemp against a restricted-substance list. Dyeing hemp fabric does not waive that list, and it does not add a health claim about dyes. NIEHS is the scientific home for endocrine-active agents. Finish chemistry stays on the tech pack beside fiber content.

What does the purchase order say for dyeing hemp fabric?

Name greige or dyed, the end cloth, the count, and the elastane percent if recovery is required. Activewear and swim are 40/2 hemp-lyocell. Bedding is US hemp with Supima, not that ply. Dyeing hemp fabric is the color line. The count is still the cloth.
