What is a microfiber shedding test?

A microfiber shedding test weighs fiber fragments released from cloth in a laboratory wash. ISO 4484-1 and AATCC TM212 are gravimetric methods. They do not, by themselves, identify the debris as plastic. Composition is a second step.

A microfiber shedding test is how a mill or a brand lab puts a number on fiber that leaves cloth in a controlled wash. The number is a mass. It is not, by itself, a verdict that the debris is plastic. ISO 4484-1:2023 collects material loss from fabrics of all types and assumes the caught debris is fibre fragments. Identifying what those fragments are is a further step. NOAA is the definition of the plastic pieces a polyester or nylon filament can become.

Imperium Fiber sells hemp yarn and hemp fabric so the body of the cloth is not that filament. The laundry pathway is already on do polyester and nylon shed in the wash. Wear-time release is on does wearing polyester shed microplastics. This page is the lab method a textile team asks for after those articles. The Journal holds both.

What a Microfiber Shedding Test Actually Weighs

Start with the scope, or the report will be quoted past its method.

ISO 4484-1 describes a laboratory wash used to collect material loss so fabrics can be compared. The wash liquor is filtered and the loss is weighed against the specimen mass. The standard says there is no direct correlation to material loss in domestic or commercial laundering. Any collected debris is treated as fibre fragments. For the nature of that debris, the standard points to ISO 4484-2. A microfiber shedding test under this name is a mass method plus, when you buy it, an identification method. Skipping identification leaves you with a weight and a guess.

AATCC TM212-2021 is the other method mills see on a quote sheet. It determines the mass of fiber fragments released in an accelerated laundering machine. AATCC states that accelerated laundering is a relative approximation of home laundering, and that an exact correlation has not been determined. It applies to textiles expected to withstand home laundering, which includes natural and cellulosic cloth, not only polyester. A microfiber shedding test on this method can therefore show plant fiber on the filter. That result is still not a polyester measurement.

The EPA tracks plastic debris in water as a trash problem. It does not turn a gravimetric textile method into a plastic-only method. If the buying question is microplastic, say so, and require composition.

How a Mill Reads a Microfiber Shedding Test

Compare specimens run the same way. Do not compare a house method to ISO 4484-1, or a new cloth to a number from a different lab year, and call it a ranking.

Mass versus plastic in a microfiber shedding test

Mass is the first column. Plastic is the second. Polyester and nylon filament can release fragments that meet the NOAA description of microplastics. A hemp or hemp-lyocell body does not start as that filament, so its fragments are not polyester microfiber. The microfiber shedding test still needs the identification step if a retailer asks "is this plastic?" The rules page keeps added particles and shed fiber in different columns. Keep mass and polymer in different columns too.

Plant lint on the same microfiber shedding test

Hemp fabric can lose plant fiber in a wash. Lint is real. It is not polyester. Does Supima hemp shed microplastics is the bedding version of that sentence. A microfiber shedding test that only reports milligrams cannot carry the sentence by itself. Pair the mass with fiber content, or with ISO 4484-2 when the lab offers it. Then the report says what left the cloth, not only how much.

Recycled polyester on a microfiber shedding test

Recycled polyester still sheds plastic microfiber. A microfiber shedding test does not grant it a natural-fiber result. Feedstock can change. The polymer in the yarn does not. If both a polyester knit and a hemp knit are on the same submission, read them as different materials that happen to share a method, not as two scores on one fiber.

What to Write After a Microfiber Shedding Test

The method belongs in the lab packet. The fiber belongs on the tech pack. They answer different questions.

Fiber content next to the microfiber shedding test

Write hemp-lyocell, or US hemp with Supima, and the elastane percent if recovery is in the cloth. Activewear and swim counts live on wellness yarn instead of polyester and hemp yarn vs polyester yarn for mills. The fabric page is wellness fabric instead of polyester. A microfiber shedding test supports that spec. It does not replace it.

Methods that are not a microfiber shedding test

Colorfastness, pilling, recovery, and abrasion are still due. Microplastic textile rules already say a natural fiber does not skip those gates. A washing-machine filter is a machine rule, not a fabric method. France's AGEC filter push is not ISO 4484-1. Do not let a microfiber shedding test stand in for the rest of the quality sheet.

One sample request

Tell the lab the method name, the fabric construction, and whether you need composition or only mass. Tell the mill the polyester or nylon style the cloth is leaving. Why swap polyester for hemp fiber now is the timing. The test is how you show the shed column with a method a second lab can repeat.

FAQ

Questions mills and brands ask before they spec this cloth.

Does a microfiber shedding test predict a home laundry load?

No. ISO 4484-1 states there is no direct correlation between its lab wash and material loss in domestic or commercial laundering. AATCC TM212 calls its result a relative approximation, not an exact match to a home machine. Use the microfiber shedding test to compare fabrics. Do not quote it as a household gram count.

Does a zero on a microfiber shedding test mean the cloth sheds nothing?

A low mass means little debris was caught under that method. It does not mean the cloth never loses fiber in wear, drying, or a different wash. Plant lint can still leave hemp fabric. Lint is not polyester microplastic. Ask for composition when the question is plastic.

Which standard names the microfiber shedding test a mill should cite?

Cite the method you actually ran. ISO 4484-1:2023 collects material loss from fabrics during washing and assumes the debris is fibre fragments. AATCC TM212-2021 measures fiber fragment release during home laundering. ISO 4484-2 is the identification step Part 1 points to. A house method is not either of those names.

Does recycled polyester pass a microfiber shedding test as a natural fiber?

No. Recycled polyester is still polyester. A microfiber shedding test can weigh its fragments. It does not change the polymer. If the debris is polyester, the fiber content is still plastic filament, recycled or not.

What should a tech pack say after a microfiber shedding test?

Write two lines. Line one is the method and the mass result. Line two is fiber content: hemp-lyocell or Supima hemp, plus any elastane percent, not polyester or nylon filament. The microfiber shedding test does not replace colorfastness, pilling, or recovery. It answers shed.
