Polyester bedding and overnight skin contact is a duration story. Sheets, pillowcases, and fitted covers can sit against skin for a third of the day. That does not turn a mattress into a clinic, but it does change how textile exposure science thinks about contact time compared with a jacket worn for a commute. Why Overnight Contact Is a Different Exposure Setting
Exposure science cares about intensity and duration. Activewear studies often emphasize sweat, heat, and friction. Bedding emphasizes hours of continuous contact, often in a warm microclimate under covers, with less dramatic sweat but more cumulative time.
That is why "polyester against skin all night" is not the same brief as "polyester in a forty-minute class." It is still a materials and pathway question: what is the fiber, what finishes were applied for wrinkle or stain performance, and what particles can leave the textile into the sleep environment. Human evidence linking a specific sheet fiber to a specific disease remains limited and contested; the defensible Journal claim is about exposure setting and inventory, not prognosis.
Finishes Common on Easy-Care Polyester and Blended Sheets
Home textiles frequently carry finish chemistry that apparel teams recognize from "performance" and "easy care" hangtags.
Wrinkle-Resistant and Easy-Care Resins
Formaldehyde-releasing or formaldehyde-related wrinkle resins have a long history in cellulosic and blended home textiles aimed at a smooth sleep surface. They appear in textile chemical inventories because dermal sensitization and residual finish questions are part of how labs and RSLs treat treated cloth. Presence on a process list is not automatic proof of harm from every washed sheet; it is a reason sourcing teams ask for finish disclosure on bedding programs that market "no iron" performance.
Stain, Softener, and Performance Packages
Softeners, soil-release packages, and stain stories can add further chemistry to a polyester or poly-blend sheet. Some outdoor and home "performance" narratives still intersect with PFAS finish chemistry in the wider textile market, which is why a PFAS-free, pesticide-free performance fabric policy belongs in home programs as well as apparel. The honest move is to treat bedding finishes as a tech-pack column, not as a lifestyle slogan.
Microfiber in the Bedroom Air and on Skin
Polyester is a petroleum filament. Like other synthetic textiles, it can release short fibers through abrasion and laundering. Bedroom dust and pillow environments are simply another indoor compartment where shed fibers can settle.
NOAA frames microplastics as a widespread contaminant class. Finding synthetic fibers in indoor dust is consistent with textiles as a source. It is not, by itself, a clinical diagnosis of overnight harm. Source control (non-plastic fiber in the sheets that dominate contact hours) changes the inventory of what can shed.
What a Plant-Fiber Bedding Spec Changes
A hemp or US Hemp / US Supima construction does not invent a medical sleep therapy. It changes the material biography of the cloth that occupies the longest dermal contact window in the home:
- No PET filament means no polyester microplastic shed from that layer.
- No antimony PET catalyst pathway from polyester polymerization (see antimony in polyester).
- Finish policy can still require no PFAS and disciplined wrinkle chemistry, or none.

Spec Checklist for Bedding Programs
Ask mills and converters for fiber content, finish list, and RSL results the same way you would for a bra or tight.
