What Is Supima Hemp?

What is Supima hemp?
Supima hemp is US-grown hemp spun with American Supima cotton. It is a cellulose blend, not polyester, so it does not shed plastic microfiber the way a poly-cotton sheet does.
Supima hemp is US-grown hemp spun with Supima cotton on a cotton system. It is a cellulose blend for sheeting, towels, and drapery. It is not a 100 percent Supima cloth, and it is not polyester. Because supima hemp has no plastic filament, it does not shed polyester microplastic the way a poly-cotton sheet does. That is the sourcing reason a brand looks at it as a natural alternative to polyester.
Imperium Fiber sells the construction as US Hemp / US Supima home goods. How the two fibers share a frame is can US-grown hemp be spun with Supima cotton. Whether the yarn sheds plastic is does Supima hemp shed microplastics. The bedding comparison is Supima hemp vs polyester bedding. More of the set is in the Journal.
What Supima Hemp Is Made Of
Supima hemp starts as two crops, not one trademark. The hemp is industrial hemp grown in the United States and cottonized to a staple a cotton frame can draft. USDA hemp rules still govern that crop, including the field THC ceiling. Cottonizing does not turn hemp into cotton. It puts the staple in the same length band as cotton so the mill can draft it.
Supima is the trademark for American-grown extra-long-staple Pima, a small share of world cotton, ginned to keep that length. Extra-long staple overlaps the upper end of Imperium's TX-A window on the HFGA US Hemp Textile Standard: length 25–45 mm, fineness 6.1–12.0 dtex, tenacity at least 35 cN/tex, shive at or below 3 percent. That overlap is why a mill can draft both fibers on one cotton system instead of pretending a coarse bast sliver is cotton. A supima hemp yarn is a blend. Printing a 100 percent Supima hangtag is a separate license with Supima, and buying the fiber does not grant it.
The hemp's job in the yarn is tenacity and the dry, breathable hand people buy linen for, without flax processing cost. The cotton's job is a smoother face than hemp alone. Write both percentages. "Supima hemp" on this site means that pairing. It is not a new species, and it is not a finish.
Where Supima Hemp Replaces a Plastic Sheet
The job is home textiles that used to default to polyester or poly-cotton for price and easy care.
Supima Hemp Has No Plastic Filament
Both fibers in supima hemp are cellulose. Polyester sheeting starts as a petrochemical polymer. A poly-cotton sheet still carries a polyester share, and that share is the plastic. Supima hemp does not add that filament to get a smooth face. The smooth face comes from Supima's extra-long staple. The drier hand comes from the hemp. Home goods states that split. A linen-hand page without this blend is a linen alternative.
Supima Hemp Does Not Shed Polyester Microplastics
Plastic shedding is a property of the polymer, not of the weave. NOAA describes microplastics as small plastic debris. EPA tracks synthetic textile debris on the path into water. A polyester or poly-cotton sheet can release that debris in the wash. Supima hemp has no polyester in the yarn to release. Cellulose can still lint. Lint is not plastic shedding, and it is not a microplastic. Overnight contact with polyester is a separate brief in polyester bedding and overnight skin contact. Wear-time shedding from garments is in does wearing polyester shed microplastics.
Supima Hemp Is a Natural Alternative to Polyester
A natural alternative to polyester, in this program, means the cloth does the bedding job without a plastic fiber. It does not mean a medical claim about sleep, hormones, or skin. It means the tech pack can name cellulose inputs, a US farm origin for both fibers, and no microplastic shed from a polyester filament. Athletic programs that need stretch and recovery are a different fiber, hemp-lyocell, covered in a natural alternative to polyester for athletic wear. Supima hemp is the home construction. Sheets that stay on this point are Supima hemp sheets without plastic shedding.
How Brands Spec Supima Hemp
Write the blend before you write the hand feel.
Put the Supima Hemp Ratio on the Tech Pack
Singles counts here are English cotton count. 24s/1 is the mid sheeting yarn. 38s/1 is the finer sheeting yarn. 40s/1 is the ultra-fine tier on the home page. Percent hemp versus Supima cotton changes strength, hairiness, and how linen the face reads. Thread count and grams are in can cotton-hemp yarn make 120–200 TC bed linen and what GSM 24s/1 and 38s/1 cotton-hemp yarn can produce. The route from US farm to India spinning and back is the US-grown hemp textile supply chain.
Keep Finishes Off the Supima Hemp Story
TX-A restricted substances on the standards page keep PFAS, glyphosate, chlorine bleach, and high formaldehyde out of the fiber grade. A converter can still add a wrinkle resin later. If the claim is clean inputs and no plastic shedding, the finish list has to stay as disciplined as the fiber. Thread count does not describe a resin. Easy-care chemistry is a separate line on the spec, not a property of supima hemp.
Ask for a Cut of the Supima Hemp You Will Sell
Request a greige or dyed cut at the sett you intend to sell, not a photo of hotel sheets. Write hello@heartland.io with the count, the hemp percent, and the end use.
