Is Supima Hemp a Natural Alternative to Polyester?

Is Supima hemp a natural alternative to polyester?

Yes. Supima hemp is a natural alternative to polyester for home textiles. US-grown hemp and Supima cotton replace the plastic filament, so the cloth does not shed polyester microplastic.

Yes. Supima hemp is a natural alternative to polyester for sheets, towels, and drapery. The blend is US-grown hemp with Supima cotton, both cellulose. Polyester is a plastic fiber. Supima hemp does that home job without a plastic filament, which is why it does not bring polyester microplastic shedding with it. The sentence is a materials claim. It is not a promise about health outcomes.

Imperium Fiber offers the cloth as US Hemp / US Supima home goods. What the name means is what is Supima hemp. The shed question is does Supima hemp shed microplastics. A side-by-side for the bed is Supima hemp vs polyester bedding. The Journal holds the rest.

What "Natural Alternative to Polyester" Means for Supima Hemp

Polyester took home-textile jobs because it is cheap, strong, and easy to finish smooth. A natural alternative has to be judged on those jobs, not on a slogan. Supima hemp keeps the jobs that are about hand and origin. It does not pretend to be a no-iron plastic.

The hemp side is cottonized US-grown hemp, grade TX-A on the HFGA US Hemp Textile Standard, staple 25–45 mm so a cotton system can draft it. The cotton side is American extra-long-staple Pima under the Supima trademark. USDA hemp rules govern the hemp crop. Together they are a spun yarn, not a filament. That is the difference from polyester, which is extruded. Athletic wear that needs nylon-like recovery is a different swap, hemp-lyocell, in a natural alternative to polyester for athletic wear and polyester alternatives for sportswear. Do not spec supima hemp as a legging yarn.

"Natural" here means the fiber origin is a crop, not a petrochemical feedstock. It does not mean the finished sheet is free of every mill chemical if a converter adds one later. Say what the yarn is. Then say what the finish list is.

What Supima Hemp Changes When It Replaces Polyester

Three differences show up on a tech pack. None of them is a lab result invented for a hangtag.

Supima Hemp Removes the Plastic Shedding Path

Polyester and poly-cotton shed plastic fragments because part of the cloth is plastic. NOAA defines that debris class. EPA is why laundry still matters for synthetic textiles. Supima hemp has no polyester share to fragment. Plant lint can still leave the cloth. That lint is not plastic shedding. Brands that want the short version can point to Supima hemp sheets without plastic shedding.

Supima Hemp Keeps a Linen Hand Without a Filament

Hemp supplies the dry, breathable hand associated with linen. Supima's extra-long staple keeps the face smoother than hemp alone. Polyester gets a smooth face from the filament and from finishes. Supima hemp gets it from fiber length. Flax costs more to process, which is why this blend is the linen-hand option on home goods at a bedding-program price. The comparison without Supima is a linen alternative.

Supima Hemp Does Not Inherit Polyester's Easy-Care Chemistry

Polyester is often chosen so a sheet looks pressed. That performance can also arrive as a wrinkle resin on cellulosic cloth. Replacing the fiber does not automatically delete a finish a converter adds later. If supima hemp is the natural alternative you are selling, the restricted-substance list on the standards page is the floor, and the finish disclosure is the rest. Overnight polyester contact, including easy-care resins, is polyester bedding and overnight skin contact.

How to Spec Supima Hemp as the Polyester Alternative

Put the alternative in the line items a mill can cost.

Write Supima Hemp Where the Spec Used to Say Polyester

Replace "polyester sheeting" or "poly-cotton percale" with the count, the weave, and the ratio. 24s/1 fits the 120 TC end of a plain sheet. 38s/1 and 40s/1 carry the finer end. Those limits are in 120–200 TC bed linen and GSM from 24s/1 and 38s/1 cotton-hemp yarn. A sentence that only says "natural alternative to polyester" cannot be woven.

Keep the Supima Hemp Hangtag Inside the Trademark

Supima licenses its mark. A hemp blend is not 100 percent Supima. Use "supima hemp" or "US hemp / US Supima" and print both fiber percentages. Do not let a buyer shorthand the cloth into a Supima-only claim. The spinning limit is can US-grown hemp be spun with Supima cotton.

Trial Supima Hemp on the Cloth That Replaced Polyester First

Start with sheeting and duvet covers, then towels. Those are the slots where polyester became the default and where hours against skin are longest. The fiber still travels USA to India to USA: US crops, cotton-system spinning in India, cloth back for US programs. Write hello@heartland.io with the count and the end use.
