What Is Wellness Yarn?

What is wellness yarn?
Wellness yarn is plant-based yarn a mill knits or weaves into cloth. It is not polyester or nylon filament. Imperium sells it as 40/2 hemp-lyocell, US hemp with Supima, or 24s hemp/wool.
Wellness yarn is the package a mill buys before anyone has a garment. It is spun or plied plant fiber on a cone, not the finished cloth and not a slogan on a hangtag. A wellness yarn has no polyester or nylon filament in the fiber, so the cloth made from it does not start with plastic microfiber already in the strand. NOAA is the definition of that plastic debris. The yarn is where a brand either specifies cellulose or specifies a polymer.
Imperium Fiber sells wellness yarn greige or dyed, in the counts each category actually runs. Athletic and swim programs center on plied 40/2 hemp-lyocell. Home programs spin US-grown hemp with Supima cotton. Outerwear starts at 24s hemp/wool. The cloth those yarns become is wellness fabric. The fiber story under both is the world's first wellness fiber for textiles. Formats are in greige and dyed yarn and fabric. More reading is in the Journal.
What Wellness Yarn Is Not
Wellness yarn is not a single count with three names. A 40/2 hemp-lyocell cone and a 24s hemp/wool cone do different jobs. Calling both "the yarn" without the count is how sourcing teams order the wrong staple. It is also not a 100 percent Supima ticket. Where Supima appears, it is American extra-long-staple cotton spun with US-grown hemp, which Supima describes as a licensed cotton, not a hemp brand.
It is not a medical claim. The yarn does not treat a condition. It is a material substitution: plant fiber instead of petroleum filament, with the performance job written into the count and the ply. EPA programs care about synthetic debris in water. A wellness yarn that never contained that filament does not add polyester or nylon fragments at the spinning step.
Elastane, when a knit needs recovery, is disclosed by percentage on athletic and swim specs. It is not hidden inside the yarn name. The wellness yarn claim covers the hemp-lyocell, hemp/Supima, or hemp/wool body. It does not pretend a stretch aid is cellulose.
Which Wellness Yarn Fits Which Mill
The right question on a tech pack is which wellness yarn, not whether yarn in general is "clean." These are the three purchases, and the articles that spec them.
Wellness yarn for activewear and swim
Wellness yarn for activewear is one plied 40/2 hemp-lyocell, Ne 20 resultant. Compression changes with the knit, not with a second fiber purchase. Wellness yarn for swimwear uses that same plied count because wet strength and low torque come from the ply. The nylon article that already frames this swap is replacing nylon fabric with hemp-lyocell. The polyester twin is the natural alternative to polyester for athletic wear.
Wellness yarn for home textiles
Wellness yarn for home textiles is US-grown hemp spun with Supima on a cotton system. Counts already published for that frame include 24s/1, 38s/1, and fine counts around 40s/1. GSM is not the yarn. What GSM 24s/1 and 38s/1 can produce and 120–200 thread count bed linen are the cloth arithmetic. Do not spec this wellness yarn as a legging yarn. Athletic recovery is the hemp-lyocell program.
Wellness yarn for outerwear
Wellness yarn for outerwear starts at 24s hemp/wool. The wool brings thermal insulation and a soft hand. The hemp brings strength at seams and a lower fiber cost than wool-only cloth. That yarn is not a swim ply and not a sheet count. USDA hemp rules still govern the hemp acre. They do not set the wool ratio. The mill writes that ratio on the ticket.
How to Buy Wellness Yarn Without Mixing Programs
Write the category, the count, and greige or dyed on the request. A cone that arrives as the wrong program cannot be knitted into the other story. Sampling quantities exist before a production run. MOQs vary by count and color.
Tie the ticket to a published comparison
If the deck says polyester, the yarn page that carries the substitution is wellness yarn instead of polyester, next to does wearing polyester shed microplastics. If the deck says nylon, use wellness yarn instead of nylon beside a natural alternative to nylon for athletic wear. The yarn claim should point at those pages, not replace them.
Keep the standard on the lot
Imperium yarn is graded against the HFGA US Hemp Textile Standard, with a restricted-substance screen. That is the document a compliance lead can file. A wellness yarn brochure that skips the count and the standard is not a spec.
Send the silhouette with the sample request
Tell the category, the garment, and the count. Athletic and swim samples are 40/2 hemp-lyocell from athletic wear and swimwear. Home samples are US hemp with Supima from home goods. Outerwear samples start at 24s from outerwear. Write hello@heartland.io or use the contact page.
