What Is Wellness Fabric?

What is wellness fabric?
Wellness fabric is cloth knit or woven from plant-based yarn so the surface against skin is cellulose, not polyester or nylon filament. It does not shed plastic microfiber.
Wellness fabric is cloth, not a hangtag and not a yarn ticket. It is the knit or weave that actually touches skin in a sports bra, a suit, a sheet, or a jacket lining. A wellness fabric starts as plant cellulose and stays that way through the surface of the garment, so the cloth does not shed plastic microfiber the way polyester and nylon filament do. NOAA describes those fragments as plastic pieces. A wellness fabric is the material decision that leaves that plastic out of the cloth.
Imperium Fiber builds wellness fabric in three programs, and they are not interchangeable. Athletic and swim cloth is hemp-lyocell. Home cloth is US-grown hemp spun with Supima cotton. Outerwear cloth is hemp/wool. The brand case for the fiber underneath sits on the world's first wellness fiber for textiles. The mill input, before it is cloth, is wellness yarn. The rest of the set is in the Journal.
What Wellness Fabric Has to Clear
A wellness fabric has to clear three gates at once, or the phrase is only marketing. Clean inputs means the fiber was not grown like conventional pesticide cotton and was not extruded as polyester. Skin-side chemistry means the finish list is not where PFAS or a heavy resin package sneaks back in. Performance means the cloth can take the job the synthetic already holds, or a brand will not switch.
Those gates are why one wellness fabric cannot cover the whole line. A 160 to 220 gsm swim knit is the wrong cloth for a sheet. A 24s hemp/wool outerwear cloth is the wrong cloth for a compression tight. The phrase stays useful when the spec names the construction.
The EPA follows synthetic textile debris toward water because laundry and wear are real pathways for plastic filament. Wellness fabric does not feed that pathway with polyester or nylon fragments. Plant lint can still leave a towel or a tee. Lint is cellulose. It is not the plastic shed those programs track.
Where Wellness Fabric Is Specified
Buyers do not purchase "wellness" as a roll. They purchase a cloth for a category. The pages below are the category specs. Each one keeps wellness fabric in that lane and points at the polyester or nylon article that already answers the comparison.
Wellness fabric for activewear
Wellness fabric for activewear is hemp-lyocell knit across the compression curve, from a high-hold bra to a studio pant. The head-to-head with the fiber it replaces is polyester vs hemp-lyocell for activewear and the natural alternative to polyester for athletic wear. Compression is a knit decision on one plant yarn, not a reason to return to filament.
Wellness fabric for swimwear and home
Wellness fabric for swimwear is the same hemp-lyocell family, knit at 160 to 220 gsm so opacity holds when the suit is wet and stretched. Wellness fabric for home textiles changes fiber on purpose. Bedding is US hemp with Supima, the cloth in what is Supima hemp, not the athletic blend. A sheet that sits on skin all night is a different contact window from a training tight, which is why polyester bedding and overnight skin contact stays in the home lane.
Wellness fabric for outerwear
Wellness fabric for outerwear is hemp/wool, starting from a 24s yarn, for jackets and mid-layers. It is a wool alternative with a lower fiber cost than wool-only cloth. It is not a polyester-legging replacement. Mixing those stories on one hangtag is how a wellness fabric claim becomes indefensible.
How a Buyer Reads Wellness Fabric
The useful read is fiber content, construction, and finish, in that order. "Performance" and "moisture-wicking" describe behavior. They do not name the polymer. A wellness fabric line should say hemp-lyocell, US hemp with Supima, or hemp/wool, then the count or gsm, then what was left off the finish list.
Match the cloth to the winning comparison
Polyester still owns next-to-skin activewear on price. The pages that already carry that argument are polyester alternatives for sportswear, does wearing polyester shed microplastics, and recycled polyester still sheds microplastics. Wellness fabric belongs in those conversations as the cloth, not as a second slogan. Nylon's stretch benchmark is the other door: replacing nylon fabric with hemp-lyocell.
Keep elastane disclosed
Four-way stretch in athletic and swim cloth uses elastane disclosed by percentage. The body of the cloth is plant cellulose. Hiding that fraction inside the word "natural" is a weaker spec than stating it. Recovery is a construction choice. The wellness fabric claim is about the filament it does not use.
Ask for the standard, then sample
Home and apparel programs on this line are graded to the HFGA US Hemp Textile Standard. USDA hemp rules cover the crop, not the loom. Sampling is how a team checks hand, opacity, and gsm before a story goes on a product page. Product constructions live on athletic wear, swimwear, home goods, and outerwear.
